Research and Development Statistics Survey

Survey’s definition 

 

It is an annual statistics report that focuses on the fields of research and development in Saudi Arabia, with the aim of providing economic indicators for research and development.

 

Survey’s objectives 

 

  • Providing data on research and development expenditures and their sources for all sectors.
  • Providing data on those employed in the field of research and development for all sectors.
  • Identifying the percentage of spending on research and development of the gross domestic product (GDP).

     

 

Main concepts

 

Spending on research and development: 

It includes all expenses related to research and development activities carried out within an economic sector.

 

Workers of research and development:

All individuals who directly participate in research and development activities, as well as those who provide direct services to these activities such as research and development managers, administrative personnel, technicians, and office employees. Individuals who provide indirect support and assistance services such as restaurant, maintenance, administrative, and security staff are excluded.

 

Researchers:

 Professionals involved in designing and innovating new knowledge. Researchers conduct research and improve or develop concepts, theories, models, technologies, devices, software, or operating methods. Managers and administrators involved in planning and managing the scientific and technical aspects of research are also classified as "researchers". Doctoral students working in research and development should also be counted as "researchers".

 

 Technicians:

Individuals whose main tasks require technical knowledge and expertise in one or more fields such as engineering, physical sciences, life sciences (technicians), social sciences, humanities, and arts. They participate in research and development to carry out scientific and technical tasks that require the application of operational concepts and methods and the use of research equipment, usually under the supervision of researchers.

 

Part-time:

An employee who works fewer hours than the usual working hours (8 hours per day).

 

25% of working hours:

 An employee who works full time (8 hours per day) for period of three months or a research employee who works for a quarter-time (2 hours per day) for a year.

 

50% of working hours:

An employee who works full time (8 hours per day) for a period of six months or a research employee who works for a quarter-time (2 hours per day) for a year.

GASTAT implements surveys and censuses, conducts studies and researches, analyzes and documents data and information for development purposes and strategic planning.

The Privacy Notice was prepared to understand how the personal data collected are handled and to understand the purpose of the data collection and processing. It is necessary for you to be aware of how GASTAT uses your personal data, and your rights regarding the processing of your personal data, in accordance with the relevant regulations and legislation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The data provider must constantly review the “Privacy Notice” to ensure if there are any updates to it, bearing in mind that GASTAT is not obligated and required to announce any updates made to this notice. Providing you with the data signifies your acceptance of its accuracy and your knowledge of it.

 

What are the collected personal data?

Various types of personal data and information is collected, which cover all aspects of life in the Kingdom: (demographic, social, economic, environmental, and cultural), including but not limited to:

Full name, age/date of birth, sex, address, contact information (e.g.: email address and phone numbers), ID number, marital status, current job information, previous job information, information about dependents/spouse//family.

No, as GASTAT is committed to maintaining the privacy of personal data for all residents of the Kingdom and does not publish it. GASTAT follows the data sharing controls approved by the regulatory entities as well. It is also committed to applying strict and firm measures for data confidentiality and non-disclosure.

Through collecting data, GASTAT aims to produce official statistics that serve the public interest. This means that any personal data collected, whether about the same person or on behalf of another person, will be used for statistical purposes and to produce official statistics.
